Jean-Christophe Helary

Professional translators are more than often taught to use proprietary tools in universities and professional groups. OmegaT has existed for 20 years as a professional Computer Aided Translation tool (CAT) and is used all around the world. This workshop will introduce participants to the concepts behind CATs and especially how they are practically put into use in OmegaT: translation memories, segmentation, exchange formats, collaborative work, etc.

Biography

I am based in Japan and am a professional translator from Japanese and English to French since 2000. I've been using free software for a bit longer and have been involved with OmegaT since shortly after its official release as free software, in 2001, helping with the "soft" aspects of its development. With the Covid-19 pandemic, I started a "development literacy" program based on OmegaT and aimed at translators who wanted to learn how to contribute code: https://sr.ht/~brandelune/omegat-as-a-book/

I am also a part time lecturer at the University of Lorraine (France) in their Computer Aided Translation MA class

Software localization (translation) of Web-based projects could be a nightmare for many developers. However, this time-consuming process can be solved easily thanks to the free software tool Tolgee. Jan Cizmar will guide you through with his workshop named Web Application Localization Without Tears. He will show you how to manage localization texts in simple UI or how to take the advantage of the in-context localization feature, so you can just click & translate the text easily.

“The more languages your software knows, the more of a satisfied users you have". However, current software localization in modern JS frameworks and other software is complicated and fairly time-consuming for all involved participants. Thanks to the in-context localization feature of free software project Tolgee, this tool offers easier localization process, more relevant translations delivery and finally less work for developers.

The workshop will contain live demo where I would like to describe using Tolgee JavaScript software development kits on simple React.js Web application example. However, Tolgee is currently compatible with other frameworks such as Angular, Svelte, Vue.js or Next.js.

Participants will learn easy localization workflow using by Tolgee tool, simple localization texts management, how to integrate Tolgee into Web app in less than one minute, how to take advantage of different Tolgee features as e.g. automatic generation of screenshots or in-context localization.

Biography

Jan is founder and CTO of Czech startup Tolgee which aims to simplify the process of software localization thanks to the free software licence. He studied Applied Informatics at Masaryk University and has more than ten years of experience with software development of different projects. With all the gained knowledge he decided to found Tolgee in March 2021 to deliver smart and simple software on his own way.

He's focusing on development in strictly typed languages like Java or Typescript as he finds it most responsible way to develop sustainable and scalable codebase. He likes to find ways to keep code clean and without boilerplate duplicities and he hates being copy-pasting monkey.

Installing Ourselves into LibrePlanethttp://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/m/installing-ourselves-into-libreplanet/2022-06-30T18:42:20.506141Zlibreplanethttp://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/

Hosted by Cristina Cochior, Karl Moubarak, and Jara Rocha of The Cell for Digital Discomfort

A workshop session to map out each of our current conditions of connecting and being together, the physical-political, and technological conditions using a diagrammatic methodology.

The workshop is geared towards installing ourselves into the conference's infrastructural spectralities by sharing, learning from and attuning to each others' conditions for connectivity, online participation and basic computer-mediated mundane day-to-day life. We want to pose this affirmation as an initial trigger: installing is about situating — attuning to our network of (inter-)dependencies and attuning to the dependencies with our local and vernacular but also standardized and planetary networks.

This workshop was created in the context of the Fellowship for Situated Practice organized by BAK.

Biography

The Cell for Digital Discomfort (CfDD) is interested in developing practices that would go towards something like “solidary discomfort” by circulating questions and experiments that deal with turbo-capitalist domination, linear solutionism, and seamless operations. CfDD wants to stay with the unease despite too-comfortable modes of infrastructural becoming, in order to intersectionally imagine ways to refuse compliance with totalitarian innovation, and to do so in a more explicit conversation with crip techno-science, anti-colonialism, queer struggles, and environmental justice.

Join us to build a network run and controlled by the users themselves. We will work through guides to show users how to run their own chat server, mail server, name server, web server, reverse proxy, VPN, and more. We welcome people with no prior experience!

Our long-term goal is to create a free network with a constitution and digital bill of rights (https://wiki.ircnow.org/?n=Freedom.Freedom).

For the workshop, we would take the user on a quick tour of the Unix command line, followed with a sysadmin course: https://wiki.ircnow.org/?n=Minutemin.Bootcamp . We provide both shell accounts and virtual private servers for users to log in and work on. Our network is based heavily on OpenBSD, but we will be opening up to allow any free operating system to join the network (currently there are plans for GNU/Linux and Plan 9).

Our network is currently centered mostly around IRC, but we have added XMPP support and will try to add Matrix soon. We welcome novices of any level.

Biography

I was not professionally trained to work in IT. I graduated from UC Irvine in 2010 with a degree in Biology. I worked teaching math/English for several years. This project is a labor of love.

Zoë began by congratulating yesterday's FSF award winners, thanking our keynotes Marleen Stikker and Hundred Rabbits, and thanking all of the day's other speakers.

She spoke about how free software is relevant in many aspects of our daily lives, and emphasized two critical areas: education and government, for which the free software movement is continuing to work toward a more just digital society. She mentioned how digital books are "riddled with Digital Restrictions Management (DRM)," the challenges that increased online proctoring bring to privacy and software freedom, and the need for wider adoption of freedom-respecting ways of doing videoconferencing in education.

Zoë said that she has "an endless amount of examples and reasons to believe that free software is the way forward, worth protecting, and something we need to make sure people understand how to fight for," and went on to list numerous other reasons for people to fight for free software. These included license adoption and copyleft, the environment, right to repair, software-embedded medical devices, bulk surveillance and encryption, among others.

She concluded her talk by thanking FSF staff, volunteers, and contributors.

In his closing remarks, FSF president, Geoffrey Knauth, highlighted the importance of the free software community's efforts, and the role the FSF plays in them, saying that, "as the host and facilitator of LibrePlanet, the FSF is proud to elevate and showcase the voices of the free software community at this annual event. The FSF staff works extremely hard to create and support the program and they deserve our thanks and appreciation. Knauth also emphasized that "we will carry these conversations forward beyond this weekend.
